>Over the years, my mother has been giving me the books that I loved and read as a child; books which she has saved for this time in my life, when I can read those books aloud to my own children. One of my favorite early books was My Goodnight Book by Eloise Wilkin. The pages are worn, the pictures dated in the seventies-style that was prevalent when the book was published.
But its message is simple and universal:
“When Mommy says, ‘It’s time for bed,’ I go upstairs and get myself undressed. …”
The little girl in the book then takes a bath, gets into her pajamas and brushes her teeth, has her daddy read her a bedtime story, and says her prayers and is tucked into bed by her mommy. Tony usually reads this book to Bug as we tuck him in for the night, and lately he’s been trying to introduce his belief of God and religion back into his life, as well as our children’s lives. For the past week, after closing the final page of the book, Tony clasps his hands together to show Bug how to pray.
The first few times, Bug was hesitant about the ritual; he thought it was funny to watch Daddy bow his head, hands held in front of his mouth, and speak aloud. The past few nights, however, Bug has anticipated prayer time; at the line, “Just before I climb into bed, I kneel and say my prayers“, Bug splays his fingers wide, interlocking them together, and says, “Prayers, Daddy.”
And so, they pray together:
‘Dear God,Thank for you for Mommy, and Daddy, and Bear,
and all my family,
and the kitties.Amen.’

>Oh, how sweet.
