>Since Bear turned five (all of two days ago) she’s developed a superiority complex. “I bet I’m the only five year old in my school!” she crowed as we were driving to school yesterday.
“Maybe not the only one in the whole school,” I replied, “But probably in your class.” Actually, she’s probably right, though. The cutoff for entering kindergarten here is turning five by October 31st (next year the cutoff is September 1st), so it’s possible that she actually is the oldest student in her school. But I didn’t want her to get too big of a head.
As we were sitting outside with the other parents and kids, Bear sat next to me on a bench, and rolled her eyes at her classmate, Preston, who’s still just four. “Four-year-olds are so silly,” she proclaimed, and sat with me for a few more moments before her desire to play overcame her pretentious ways.
When I picked her up at the end of the school day, 2.5 hours later, her teacher laughed as she told me how, upon entering the classroom after they played outside, Bear called the class to attention by proclaiming, “Look out everyone, there’s a five-year-old in the class!”
That’s my girl. Modest, humble. And not afraid to let everyone know where she stands.
